“Con đau đớn vì thấy nhiều phản bội với Chúa: tốt, nhưng chưa đủ. Phải làm như Mađelêna “được tha nhiều vì đã yêu nhiều”; phải làm như thánh Gioan: trốn bỏ Chúa trong vuờn Giêtsimani, nhưng trở lại đứng bên thánh giá, dốc quyết hằng yêu mến bằng hành động.” (Đường Hy Vọng, số 890) Lạy Chúa Giêsu, xin cho con đủ khiêm tốn nhận mình là tội lỗi, xin cho con đủ can đảm bắt đầu lại cuộc đời, xin cho con đủ bao dung không kết án tha nhân. Xin cho con nhìn thấy được lòng thương xót Chúa bao la và dịu dàng để đánh động con tim quay về với Chúa. Xin cho con biết mình đã được thứ tha nghìn lần để con biết chạnh lòng tha thứ cho mọi người ngay cả khi con bị tổn thương đau đớn tột cùng.

Compassion and Mercy vs. Cruelty and Judgement

In this week’s Gospel for the 5th Sunday of Lent, the Pharisees were testing Jesus about an Old Testament Law of Moses, that a woman who has been caught in the act of adultery should be stoned to death, so that they might have grounds for accusing him. They presented this woman to Jesus by cruelly dragging her across town and throwing her to the ground before the general public and at the foot of Jesus, asking him to give his judgement upon her, when in fact they were already hoping for a judgement of death. Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground and afterwards said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” When they heard this, they began to leave one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman whom he treated with tremendous compassion and mercy. Many church fathers have speculated that what Jesus had written on the ground here was indeed the elder’s sins themselves, drawing attention to the modern day idiom that: Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. This gospel message should help us reflect on how important it is for us to not be hypocrites nor judgmental as we are all sinners ourselves before God, and to not criticize others if you have similar weaknesses yourself. For at the foot of Jesus, seeking compassion and mercy is a better pathway towards forgiveness and love towards our neighbors, rather than condemnation.
